The purpose of the celebration of this day is to draw attention to the accomplishments of Srinivasa Ramanujan and to emphasize that obtaining higher education is not the only path to success.
Every year on December 22, National Mathematics Day is observed to honor mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan’s birthdate. Ramanujan, who was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu, in 1887, received very little formal instruction in pure mathematics.
Considered as one of the most exceptional mathematicians from India, Ramanujan tackled issues that appeared nearly unsolvable. His contributions to the fields of continuous fractions, elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series, Riemann series, and functional equations of the zeta function are well known.
Even though Ramanujan died in 1920 at the young age of 32, the Indian government opted to commemorate his birthday as National Mathematics Day a few years later.
In addition to designating December 22 as National Mathematics Day, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proclaimed 2012 to be National Mathematics Year.
Remarkably, Srinivasa Ramanujan was also depicted on the 2012 India stamp. A few years later, on December 22, 2017, Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh saw the opening of the Ramanujan Math Park.
Robert Kanigel also wrote a biography of the Indian mathematician in 1991; Matthew Brown turned it into a film in 2016. Both the book and the film version include a thorough description of his Indian childhood, accomplishments, and mathematical partnership with mathematician GH Hardy.
National Mathematics Day usually has no set topic, and schools observe it in accordance with their schedules. The purpose of commemorating this day is to draw attention to the accomplishments of Srinivasa Ramanujan and to emphasize that obtaining formal, advanced education is not the only path to success. Children are inspired, like Ramanujan, to think critically and logically beyond the pages of a textbook.
Schools and colleges host competitions, Olympiads, and other educational events to commemorate National Mathematics Day.
