The University of Queensland is extending a generous hand to high-achieving students in India by offering the UQ India High Achievers Scholarship. This scholarship, valued at 20% of total program tuition fees, is available to eligible Indian students who enroll in various full-time programs at the university. The initiative aims to foster enduring relationships and a deeper understanding between Australia and India, as students get the opportunity to immerse themselves in education and culture across borders. The uncapped scholarships are open to high-performing students in India, reflecting the university’s commitment to strengthening academic ties with the country, which has been ongoing for over 50 years.
UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry emphasized the importance of such scholarships in building strong academic links and facilitating a broader exchange of knowledge. During their visit to India, the UQ delegation engaged with various stakeholders, including partners in education, industry, and government. The meetings included discussions with the Australian High Commissioner, the Ministry of Education, the University Grants Commission, and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The goal is to deepen the partnership between Australia and India, addressing challenges on a global level.
Chancellor Peter Varghese highlighted the strategic significance of the bilateral relationship, stating that a growing Indian economy will require more services and resources that Australia is well-placed to provide. The collaboration extends beyond scholarships, with flagship research partnerships such as the UQ-IITD Research Academy. This joint PhD program involves over 100 students and focuses on finding solutions to global challenges, including renewable energy technologies, vaccine development, and innovative urban planning. The UQ delegation also renewed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, reaffirming their commitment to collaborative research across various areas of expertise.
