The University of Southampton has been granted a license by the Indian government to establish a comprehensive campus in India, marking a significant milestone in international education collaboration. The license, awarded by the University Grants Commission (UGC), enables the UK-based institution to deliver high-quality education, research, and knowledge exchange in the country.

The forthcoming campus aims to produce world-class graduates equipped with both specialized and transferable skills, ready to meet the demands of the global workforce. In addition to education, the campus will engage in research and knowledge exchange in collaboration with local universities, industries, and government bodies. These efforts are designed to create tangible social and economic impacts, furthering India’s progress as an entrepreneurial and innovative nation.

Mark E. Smith, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “In the 21st century, no university can be truly global without engaging with India. Our goal is to establish a campus that brings together Southampton’s world-class activities in education, research, and enterprise, while harnessing the immense talent of India, a rising global superpower.”

Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice-President International and Engagement, highlighted the campus’s role in fostering academic collaboration and enhancing the Indian higher education system. “University of Southampton Delhi NCR will be the first comprehensive international campus in India, offering the opportunity to study for a top 100 degree within the country,” he said.

Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, added, “This new campus will be a center of world-class education and innovation, offering British students the chance to experience life in India. This collaboration will further strengthen the unique living bridge between our two countries.”

The establishment of the University of Southampton’s campus in India represents a significant step forward in global educational partnerships, providing new opportunities for students and contributing to the development of both nations.
