To mark the occasion, the university has announced its new campus in India by celebrating the same on Wednesday at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in New Delhi, in the presence of British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron and other dignitaries.

Gurugram, in the National Capital Region, will be the location of the new campus, and the initial bachelor’s programs to be offered will include computer science, business management, economics, and accounts and finance besides two master’s programs in international management and finance. However, more courses will also be rolled out yearly in order to widen the courses on offer

British High Commissioner, Lindy Cameron, speaking at the occasion, hailed the new campus as a landmark in UK-India education relations. “This association signals the first international university to set up a comprehensive campus in India, developing the bonds between our two nations, to ensure students from both the UK and India benefit, she said.

Our vice-president, International and Engagement, at University of Southampton, Prof Andrew Atherton said: “Our campus in India will deliver the same Southampton degree our students receive in the UK, but in a world-class environment in Delhi NCR which promises an exceptional student experience. It is a step change in our strategy to become a global, inclusive university.”

Alison Barrett MBE, Director India, British Council, said, ‘This is the first UK institution to have secured a license under University Grants Commission regulations for establishing a full campus in India. The partnership with the University will not just be a strengthening of ties in education but go towards building a brighter future for the students of both nations.

It falls into a broader India initiative to create an opportunity for global universities to set up shop within its borders. On 29 August, the UGC wrote a Letter of Intent to the University of Southampton.
