Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has entered into a strategic collaboration with Airbus India Private Limited to enhance aviation and logistics education in Assam, a move expected to positively impact the socio-economic development of the northeastern region. The partnership, which follows consultations with Assam Government’s Transport, Skill, and Industries Departments, aims to advance education, skill development, and industry readiness in aviation and logistics.
A Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) was signed between Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, and Rémi Maillard, President and Managing Director of Airbus India Private Limited, marking the beginning of this initiative. The signing ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Secretary Dr. S. Ravi Kota, and other senior representatives from Airbus and IIT Guwahati.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that this collaboration will not only promote knowledge sharing but also shape the future of the aviation industry. “This partnership will focus on key areas such as transportation, hospitality, skilling, and logistics, all of which have immense growth potential. Students participating in these programs will receive scholarships to support their career development,” he said.
Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that it aligns with the institute’s vision of advancing education in aviation and logistics. “This initiative will empower the youth of Assam and the northeastern region, fostering innovation and economic growth. It addresses the critical need for skilled professionals in aviation and logistics,” he added.
Suraj Chettri, VP and Head of HR at Airbus India and South Asia, also highlighted the importance of skilled manpower in the aviation industry. “We are committed to developing a skilled workforce in India and will continue to invest in such initiatives. This partnership lays the foundation for sustainable growth and global leadership in aviation,” he said.
Key highlights of the partnership include:
– Development of comprehensive programs to advance aviation education in the northeastern region.
– Establishment of a Global Skilling Centre in Aviation and Logistics at IIT Guwahati to address the shortage of skilled professionals in the sector.
– Collaboration on training and development programs aimed at equipping individuals with industry-relevant skills.
– Airbus will provide trainers, materials, and tools for short-term courses and assist IIT Guwahati faculty in conducting “Train the Trainer” programs for long-term sustainability.
