2nd Round of Capacity Building Programme Initiated by Education Ministry

Education Ministry

The Education Ministry has launched the second cycle of a capacity-building programme focused on addressing learning disabilities, aiming to enhance the abilities of educators, administrators, and other stakeholders in identifying and supporting students with specific learning disabilities (SLDs).

According to officials, this initiative, part of the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP), is designed to equip Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively support students with SLDs.

“The New National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 acknowledges the presence of learning disabilities among some students and envisions equitable and inclusive education for all. It emphasizes that HEIs must be aware of students with specific disabilities, including learning disabilities, and should be sensitized to address the associated challenges,” said Higher Education Secretary Sanjay Murthy, as reported by PTI.

He added that to address these challenges, it is crucial to conduct regular capacity-building programmes on learning disabilities.

The first cycle of the ‘Capacity Building Programme on Specific Learning Disabilities,’ conducted in partnership with Changeinkk Foundation, ran from January to July. During this phase, 27 Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), including Central Universities, IITs, IIITs, IIMs, IISERs, SPAs, and NITs, participated. The programme included sessions such as orientation, sensitization, master classes, zone-wise in-person workshops, and implementation monitoring.

The second cycle, which began today and will continue until December, involves both online and in-person sessions for a newly selected group of HEIs. This cycle will focus on strategies and tools for identifying, assessing, and addressing the needs of students with SLDs.

According to the Ministry of Education, the programme will primarily target sensitizing the heads of institutions, along with the heads of five departments and two representatives from each department.

Participants will engage in a series of interactive workshops, expert-led seminars, and practical sessions aimed at enhancing their ability to create inclusive learning environments. Upon successful completion, this approach will be extended to a new group of HEIs in subsequent six-month cycles.
