Manu Bhaker secured India’s first medal at the Paris Olympics, winning a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol finals with a total of 221.7 points, just shy of a silver. South Korea’s Jin Ye Ho and Yeji Kim claimed the gold and silver medals, respectively.
Manu Bhaker, an Indian Olympian in shooting, made history as the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal. Her bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event was India’s first medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Following Bhaker’s historic achievement, there was hope for the women’s archery team to enter the medal round. However, they lost to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Arjun Babuta and Ramita Jindal raised India’s medal hopes by qualifying for the Men’s and Women’s 10m Air Rifle finals.
Bhaker’s medal placed India at the joint 18th spot with South Africa, Hungary, and Spain in the overall standings. The prospects look promising as Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta have also entered the finals of the 10m air rifle women’s and men’s events, respectively.
Chasing a third successive Olympic medal, PV Sindhu showcased her prowess and earned the tag of ‘national treasure’ in Indian sports. She displayed her class with a resounding straight games win over Maldives’ Fathimath Abdul Razzaq in their opening women’s singles group stage match in Paris.
