Jharkhand SPKSY initiative- Improving girl’s education, preventing premature marriage

Jharkhand

The Jharkhand government through its Savitribai Phule Kishori Samriddhi Yojana is doing some decent work in the pursuit of promoting education among girls and nullifying early marriages. The scheme launched by Chief Minister Hemant Soren empowers adolescent girls to achieve gender equity for attainment of good monetary assistance in pursuing their academic aspirations.

The authorities claimed that SPKSY has successfully prevented early child marriages, decreased the rate of school dropouts, and motivated the girls for higher education. Scholarships of Rs 40,000 under the programme are disbursed in six installments that enable to increase studies for adolescent girls. Scholarships of Rs 20,000 in five installments are provided to beneficiaries studying between classes 8 to 12, while a single instalment scholarship is also awarded to them at the age of 18 to 19 in the amount of Rs 20,000.

It is reported that by the 2023-24 academic year, an approximate nearly 715,000 adolescent girls enrolled in the scheme have their benefits extended to about 900,000 girls across the state. This is a very broad outreach for such a large commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for young women in Jharkhand.

Laxman Hajam, a parent whose daughter is in class 10, shared his gratitude for the program, stating, “The scheme has ensured that financial constraints would no longer hinder my daughter’s dream of becoming a doctor. Now, she can continue her education.” This sentiment is echoed by many parents who view SPKSY as a vital resource for their daughters’ futures.

During a recent outreach program titled “Apki Yojna, Apki Sarkar, Apke Dwar” (your scheme, your government at your doorstep), Chief Minister Soren emphasized the initiative’s comprehensive benefits. He noted that the support has been expanded to include all daughters in a family, alleviating previous limitations that restricted benefits to just two daughters.

The initiative has garnered personal testimonials as well. Dhaneshwari Devi, a mother from the Kanke block in Ranchi, highlighted the importance of financial assistance in furthering her daughter’s education. A class-11 student from Dhanbad, also a beneficiary from a minority community, expressed her gratitude, stating, “My marriage was finalized by my family, but I wanted to continue my studies. The scheme is helping me pursue my dreams.”

Overall, the SPKSY initiative stands as a testament to Jharkhand’s commitment to advancing girls’ education and fostering a future where young women can realize their full potential, free from the constraints of early marriage.
