Australia has seen a significant increase in the number of Indian students coming to the country for higher education, surpassing pre-Covid levels. The Department of Home Affairs in Australia granted 382,000 student visas between July 2022 and February 2023, representing a 41.3% increase compared to the same period in 2019-2020. This surge in Indian students studying in Australia is attributed to several factors, including growing aspirations for international degrees, student and migrant-friendly policies, world-class universities, and post-study work opportunities.

Key points:

Increased Enrollment: The number of Indian students studying in Australia has risen significantly, with 95,791 students recorded in the January-April period of 2023 compared to 75,109 students during the same period in 2022.

Appealing Courses: The Australian government introduced a list of courses focused on science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and health, addressing skill gaps in these areas. Students enrolling in these courses are granted additional years for post-study work, making them more attractive options.

Policy Changes: The Australian government is making various policy changes to attract international students, including reviewing the Migration Act and modifying post-study work policies. These changes aim to provide students with more opportunities and flexibility.

India-Australia Relationship: The strong relationship between India and Australia is evident in initiatives such as the Mutual Recognition of Qualifications signed in March and the approval for Australian universities to set up foreign campuses in India. This collaboration enhances educational mobility between the two countries.

The increase in Indian students choosing Australia for higher education reflects the country’s commitment to providing quality education, fostering international partnerships, and offering favorable policies to attract and retain talent from around the world.
